Thinking about vegetable plots
Updated: Feb 28, 2025
If this takes your fancy, and at danger of stating the obvious, ask yourself:
How much time and attention can and do you want to spend on it? This is often less than you might imagine, particularly if you build in a tendency to procrastinate..
Is your plot fit for purpose e.g. can you capture water if not on tap, and are your beds the right height to not break your back? What is the soil like? What needs to change?
What vegetables do you actually like eating, and in what quantities - courgettes anyone?
Of these, which taste noticeably better when homegrown, and what are a hiding after nothing (cheaper, less hassle and not wildly dissimilar if bought)? Focus on the former.
What do you want to be able to harvest and when? Consider when you can get into the garden and if you'll be around to pick and eat what you hope to grow.
Think about what you can plant with what, so as to stop to your produce being munched by someone other than youself eg green beans and marigolds.
What do you need to do now in order to get the best possible crop, when you want it?
Good sources of advice include the usual: RHS, Gardeners World, Sainsburys magazine etc.
Alternatively, seek out words of wisdom by hovering near the best kept / most productive allotment in your village - David Page beware!
