I fear it became clear early on that hibernation might be the best way of dealing with a cold, wet and tempestuous January...
In all honesty, there is little that can't wait at this time of year. As such, we decided to make a cultural shift in favour of the Chinese New Year (this weekend) and are only now emerging into the still rather pitiful daylight, but at least the shortest day is now finally behind us.
So what now? What can be done at this time of year? Here are a couple of ideas:
Cut old leaves off your hellebores so any new flowers can flourish and be seen
Clean / wash out your greenhouse with disinfectant to get rid of unwanted pests
Slow seeds indoors
Prune trees and hedges whilst they sleep
Plant bare root hedges, trees and roses
First and foremost, note the snow drops as they emerge and pave the way for aconites, primroses, crocuses, narcissi and daffodils. A hundred and one variations on a beautiful small white flower - you have to respect it!
Of course, there are the equally sensible options to either do nothing (all too often the best path), mentally prepare yourself for what is to come, or focus on the house instead. All are equally valid. We can help with all but the first.
Should you feel spurred into contemplation and would like a gentle steer, please do choose from a number of blog posts on this site, depending on your want or need.
Fundamentally, if you get no further than this post, or if things deviate from plan, don't panic, feel bad or ignore your garden. It will simply continue to grow and its enthusiasm can be curbed at a later date.
If you would appreciate a sounding board, do just give us a call. We aren't landscape gardeners but we are practical, deal with a variety of needs and can come up with some sound suggestions or point you in the right direction.
Similarly, if you just need a hand taming a jungle, scrubbing a greenhouse or anything else we might be able to turn our hands to, do get in touch.
It just remains to wish you all a happy and prosperous Year of the Snake!
